Illustrating stories of the province with the Royal Alberta Museum
Curio Studio | Case Study
After nearly 3 years of closure, the new Royal Alberta Museum reopened in October 2018. With double the space and over 2.4 million uniquely Alberta Stories to tell, the new museum is an authentic reflection of Alberta.
Over the past two years, RAM collaborated with Curio on a variety of illustrated permanent exhibitions within the Children’s and Human History Gallery.
The most complex illustration project we have ever completed was for the children’s gallery: The Alberta Map. A layered, full colour map of our province featuring hundreds of different animals, plants, structures, rivers, roads, people, historical elements and so much more.
Production was complex as our team researched, sketched concepts, and developed final artwork for each element. The final product is a beautiful representation of our province, installed at a child’s eye level right inside the children’s museum entrance.
Working closely with the RAM team, it was a race against time (and budget!) to include as many elements as possible. Representing each element in a contemporary (but accurate!) way is a reminder of how back and forth between client and designer is so critical.
Why is the client to designer relationship important?
Building a trusting relationship with a design firm takes time. Your company’s visual material is being entrusted with our creative team and we respect that. We want you to look forward to every aspect of working with our team, and for the outcome to be perfect.
How will Curio make your experience meaningful?
At Curio, we feel the best results come from the client working with the designer. With no middle man, our creative team meets with you directly, making sure as little as possible gets lost in relaying information. Our job is to learn everything we can about you and your project, including vision, values, challenges and goals. We use that information to create gorgeous work that is in line with all aspects of your company.
